How to improve your website position in Google

Read some useful tips that will help you significantly improve your website position in search engine results. In essence, I made the following compendium of practical knowledge on SEO that I have acquired over the past few years. It does not cover all the secrets of the subject, but probably will, in a relatively short time, promote your site in search engines, especially Google - currently the most popular search engine on the web.

What is SEO?

Search engine optimization (SEO) is the process of placing your website among the first results displayed by search engines for the most popular keywords related to the theme of our website. The ranking given to your website by the search engines will decide whether there shall be a link to your site.

How search engines work and how to use them?

Search engines use different assessment methods and algorithms for evaluating sites. The algorithms vary among search engines, but we can easily distinguish 3 main elements that are taken into account:
  1. Site popularity
  2. Link popularity
  3. Structure and content

Site Popularity

Popularity is measured by the number of visits over a specified time and the time spent by internet users on this website. Positioning the page for this parameter consists in creating attractive titles and links within a website, so that visitors feel more tempted / encouraged to explore the content and not to navigate away.

Time spent on your site is of course dependent on whether visitors find the information they look for and how much content is interesting for them. The more your website is visited by users and the longer they spend on it, the faster the popularity parameter grows.

Link popularity

Link popularity is a factor which now gains more and more importance in search engines. Link popularity factor is determined by the number of connections (the number of links) leading to the site from other sites and the value of these connections.

Google founders (Larry Page and Sergey Brin) have developed a particular system of link evaluation. The algorithm of the search engine gives each site a Page Rank. This parameters represents the reputation of a site, and it is considered best to get one way links from high Page Rank sites. Using link building as a SEO tool is quite complex subject and it has been described thoroughly in the article Things to consider when getting links.

The Google algorithm pays attention to the quality of the page on which your link is found, so mass placement of links on random pages that already contain dozens of links to various sites is completely pointless.

The quantity of links doesn't play a big role in search engines anymore. It's much more complicated than that. The factors that are important is the authority of the domains that point to your site, as well as their diversity (different IP number). In my experience, it is now even better to have only five links from five different sites (five different domains) than 5000 links from one site.

Structure and content

Structure and content of the page is no longer an important role in website poisitoning. But remember that search engines continue to pay some attention to such factors as: keyword frequency (number of repetitions of a given keyword), keyword density (the percentage of those words in the structure of the page), positioning of keywords (keywords should appear at the beginning of the page).
